Club In A Box – Community Futures

Since its launch in 2017, the Club In A Box initiative has helped communities across the country take their first strokes into the world of pilot gig rowing. Designed to support new and developing clubs, the scheme provides all the essentials needed to get on the water – making gig rowing more accessible and helping clubs grow from the ground up.
The concept is simple but powerful: each Club In A Box package includes a GRP training gig, a set of oars, seats, cover, pins, and a trailer, everything a new club needs to get rowing and build a strong foundation within their local community.
CPGA Chair Phoebe Millar explained,
“We’ve seen time and again how access to a gig and basic equipment can transform a community’s ability to come together, row, and develop a sustainable club. Club In A Box removes one of the biggest barriers for emerging clubs, the cost of getting started and can be the catalyst for something truly special. Clubs can go from first launch to racing, to becoming vital parts of their local sporting community. It’s inspiring to watch – and we can’t wait to see where the next boat will go.”

Over the years, a number of clubs have benefitted from the programme, including:
London Cornish – Richmond, London
Newhaven – Sussex
Torpoint Rowers – Cornwall
Portishead – Somerset
Lewes – Sussex
Chichester Yacht Club – Sussex
Thames Barbarians – Kent
EpicGigability – Falmouth, Cornwall
Weston-Super-Mare – Somerset
Brading Haven Yacht Club – Isle of Wight
Midland Cornish Rowing Club – Derbyshire

Many of these clubs have since become active members of the CPGA, now playing an important role in providing health, wellbeing, and social opportunities through gig rowing.
The scheme continues to evolve, ensuring that even more communities have the chance to experience the unique camaraderie and challenge that come with gig rowing. Applications are now open for the next round of Club In A Box, with a closing date of Monday, 10th November 2025.
Successful applicants will have access to the boat and equipment for up to two years, giving them the opportunity to establish regular training, recruit members, and build a thriving club identity.
