The Cornish Pilot Gig is at the heart of our sport and is the key to its popularity and success.
The lines and construction of Cornish Pilot Gigs were shaped by the needs of our coastal communities. To be affordable the materials had to be indigenous and locally sourced. To be a suitable lifeboat it had to be stable and seaworthy in rough seas whilst to win a pilotage contract it needed to be sufficiently light and speedy. The result is a beautiful wooden heritage vessel which is stable and accessible for beginners yet responsive and fast when raced.
