The CPGA is proud to launch Event In A Box – a new initiative aimed at strengthening community sports events across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The project is supported by funding from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme.
Developed in response to the needs of its member clubs, the CPGA’s Event In A Box project will deliver a shared, loanable resource designed to help gig rowing clubs and event hosts stage safe, professional, and inclusive regattas. The kit will support the smooth delivery and long-term sustainability of community gig rowing events. The project has received £69,165 in funding from the Good Growth Community Levelling Up Programme.
The Event In A Box kit provides essential infrastructure and equipment to enhance the experience for participants, spectators, and local communities, including:
– A shore-based race HQ for communication and coordination
– On-water race assets for safe and consistent course setup
– Safety components for rowers, volunteers, and the public
– Media and signage resources to raise visibility and accessibility
– Fan zone features to foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere
This practical solution addresses barriers faced by many volunteer-led clubs—such as the cost and complexity of hiring or purchasing event infrastructure—and supports the delivery of well-run, engaging events that celebrate maritime heritage.
Claire Tripp, CPGA Manager, said, “Event In A Box responds directly to the challenges faced by our clubs. It’s a community-first solution that reduces the burden on volunteers and enhances the quality of gig racing events. Importantly, it helps secure the long-term future of our sport in the places where it matters most.”
The initiative also aligns with the broader goals of the CIOS Good Growth Programme, which supports investment in communities and place, local businesses, and people and skills.
By investing in the infrastructure that underpins vibrant local events, Event In A Box will support the continued growth of gig rowing while delivering positive economic, cultural, and social impacts for communities across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
