Applications are being welcomed for our Club In A Box scheme which provides a club with a GRP gig, oars and equipment.
The initiative aims to support clubs to create more gig rowing activities in their communities and to engage more members in new ways.

The Club In A Box scheme aims to support new and emerging clubs to get up and running at minimum expense so that they can:
- provide more rowing activities
- serve greater numbers of people
- work towards securing own Cornish Pilot Gig
The first GRP training gig was launched on a glorious sunny day in February 2017 in Christchurch, Dorset. Since then 11 clubs have participated in the scheme encouraging hundreds of people to enjoy the many benefits of gig rowing including physical activity, time in nature and spending time with new friends.
“The Club in a Box scheme is a brilliant contribution to new clubs starting up and dipping their toes in the water of gig rowing… Thanks to the loan we were able to run taster days to introduce new members and attend away events helping us get to know other clubs in the area. It’s a low cost way to start building the club, which meant we could focus on fundraising for our own wooden gig, which we launched in April 2022, ready for our first trip to the Scillies as a full member CPGA club. “
Thames Barbarians Pilot Gig Club
The package provides clubs with everything that they need to get on the water and row, including:
- GRP Training Gig
- Set of oars
- Set of seats
- Cover
- Trailer
“The concept of Weston-super-Mare Pilot Gig Club started in June 2022…We were set up with a training gig (Walter Hicks) and 20+ eager members thanks to the CPGA Club in a Box Scheme…. By the end of 2022, with the support of all the other local gig clubs and coxswains we had our own fully trained crew enabling us to train a waiting list of new members and nearly double our rowing membership.”
