CPGA Funding Announcement: October 2023

We are delighted to announce that the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) has been awarded funding by Cornwall Council from Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme.

Through the programme’s Cultural Events and Talent Programme stream, the funding will support a community project, Wave of Events, which will serve to develop the calendar of gig rowing events and competitions across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

As well as contributing towards the delivery of the World Pilot Gig Championships 2024, Wave of Events will support competition leagues and help the GigRower Stream Team in their efforts to bring gig rowing to a wider audience and support off-water activities that bring together the community.

Wave of Events has received £135,000 from the Good Growth Programme, which is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and managed by Cornwall Council. This will be spent across an 18-month period during which time a soon to be recruited Wave of Events team will work to deliver the project targets. Recruitment is now underway for an Event Lead and a Communications and Marketing Lead, via the Vacancies section of the CPGA website.

Claire Tripp, CPGA Manager said: “We are hugely excited about the opportunities that this project will bring to our community and we look forward to making our events more engaging and enjoyable for participants, spectators and wider audiences.”

Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for economy said: “Supporting projects like this that mean so much to our communities and their identities and are so much a part of our cultural heritage, is hugely important. This project will springboard more coverage of gig rowing events and help the sport reach a wider audience, as well as bring communities together off the water to celebrate the cultural distinctiveness of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”

The Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme has been allocated £132m from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to spend on local investment and is managed by Cornwall Council.
