The first boat of the Club in a Box fleet, Seven Stars (Tribute) left for a long journey to her new home for the next twelve months.
OARsome Adventure Rowing were successful following their recent application and collected the boat, Seven Stars, with great excitement on Sunday 23rd April.
OARsome Adventure Rowing was formed at the end of 2022 in response to a need in the area for a rowing club that offers both adventure and some racing opportunities to all.
They currently own a Harker’s Yard gig (4 person) and their aim is to buy a Cornish Pilot Gig.
“Interest in Cornish gig racing in this area is high and OAR would seek to open the opportunity of enjoying Cornish Gig rowing and racing to a wider audience”
OARsome are based at West Mersea, Colchester in Essex and have the neighbouring club, Rowhedge club, who own Valkyrie and Golden Gear, just around the corner.

Clive and Sam, who collected the boat, paid a visit to Newquay Rowing Club to gain some insight into the history of the Cornish Pilot Gigs and to learn about the ‘Old Girls’ (Newquay, Dove and Treffry). The visit also allowed them the opportunity to look at all Newquay gigs, thanks to John Bawden who answered their questions and gave them further insight into the traditions of the rowing and the sport.
In regards to their hopes for the future as the new custodians of Seven Stars, they told us:
“This scheme will enable OAR, to increase our membership, to increase knowledge of rowing and running a vibrant community lead rowing group. To expand our ability to compete and experience Cornish Gig rowing and to use this opportunity to raise funds to buy our own Cornish Pilot Gig”
