County crews took to the water at the Mount Batten Centre in Plymouth this weekend for the National County Championships sponsored by Korev. Junior races were held on Saturday 15th and the adult categories were held on Sunday 16th. The racing took place directly outside the Mount Batten Centre which made for great spectating.
Cornwall made a clean sweep of all categories but there was determined competition from the other County sides. After the presentation of medals to the winner, rowers participated in a number of inter-county mix up races. Typically of the sport, this led to some fierce competition as rowers took on their crew members from the morning racing.
The National County Championships has not been held for two years due to the Covid pandemic. CPGA Trustee Peter Fisher said ‘It has been really rewarding to bring this event back to Mount Batten and see our county sides competing again at this fantastic venue. The addition of junior categories this year proved that we have some really talented young people. Supporting and growing our junior section is very much a priority for our sport.’
The National County Championships has become a regular fixture in the Cornish Pilot Gig Association calendar and is the final championship event of the 2022 gig racing season. CPGA Officer, Claire Tripp said ‘The success of an event of this scale depands on a large team and we are really grateful to the volunteers, the county selection teams, the staff at Mount Batten Centre for all their help and also the support provided by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership is the Business Improvement District for the Plymouth Waterfront.’
