Covid-19

CPGA Coronavirus Update 18/07/2021

Monday 19th July is the day that restrictions are lifted legally.

For CPGA clubs we offer the following guidance:

With cases of Covid still rising, we encourage clubs to maintain a covid secure protocol.

• Wash / sanitise hands regularly
• Do not row / visit your club / regatta if you or anyone in your household are showing signs of covid
• Encourage individuals to take lateral flow tests (still free of charge) if they are not already for their work
• Continue to monitor with a Club QR code or the clubs method of track and track, or continue with the NHS QR code
• Respect the rules set by your club and help yourself, club members and public stay healthy
• Follow rules set out by your club to keep equipment and facilities clean
• Be kind to your club committee who are giving their time to ensure all are safe and rowing can take place

Social distancing no longer remains at 2 metres, but as a club you need to decide what you are happy with amongst members / as a committee.

Likewise, indoors, close contact when lifting gigs, confined spaces etc housing for a gig, clubs may wish to consider a policy regarding face coverings.

You may wish to set crews according to their wishes eg those that are double jabbed, age groups, those continuing to wear masks.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 04/01/2021

Following government announcements/advice, the CPGA advise suspending all gig rowing activity, at all levels.

Gig rowing activity includes club training, league, CPGA and any regattas, plus any courses (unless via online platforms) from 4th January.

The decision has been taken following the government advice in the interests of rowers, coxes, coaches, umpires, volunteers, supporters and the wider gig rowing community.

Where possible all are encouraged to maintain their own fitness, while following government guidelines about safe distance and safe exercise environments.

The CPGA will continue to review and monitor government advice and will provide updates in the coming weeks.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 20/12/2020

Yet again the situation is changing. There are now CPGA clubs in all tiers 1 – 4. If you are in tier 4 – no rowing is to take place.

Information – click on links below for full info.
• Tier 4
• Tier 3
• Tier 2
• Tier 1

Also Sport England & British Rowing

Please also remember if you are in a mixed tier bubble on Christmas Day, guidance suggest you should reduce contact with people outside your bubble for the two weeks / 10 days after you last meet with your Christmas bubble. During this period, you should consider restricting your rowing activity to your own household, not your rowing crew bubble.

Once again, we need to emphasise that you are following guidance and any rowing that does take place MUST be risk assessed with Covid protocols in place and accessible to all members, mitigation actions must be followed. Please do not be complacent. Anything published on social media needs show you followed covid protocol.

Some key points to remember:
• Social distancing where possible
• Masks on launch and recovery
• No changing of crews/cox during a rowing session
• Wearing of masks / face shields for coxes
• Cleaning boat and equipment between rowing sessions and after use
• Contact tracing in place (see Weekly Update 40 for QR codes / NHS tracing)

With any activity that takes place all – members rowing and non-rowing, and the general public must see that all is being done to limit any spread of Covid. Please remember that if you are using social media only publish compliant photos / videos and remember that there are others who will publish anything and even contact the CPGA if they see a club not following good practice.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 01/11/2020

We are all aware that covid-19 has had an effect on rowing and continues to do so.

From the announcements on the 31st October 2020 in relation to a national lockdown from, and including 5th November, having read the Gov.uk guidance, the indications are that rowing will probably have to be suspended from this date.

We will update you asap with more information when we have it. Please keep checking emails / website and social media.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 27/09/2020

From the 24th September, clubs are also required to display an official NHS QR code to support NHS Test and Trace. Leisure and Tourism – Clubs providing team sporting activities.

You can create your own Club NHS QR code using the link. PLEASE NOTE this is in addition to your club’s own track and trace, not instead of.

Clarifying Statement on Fixed Seat Rowing

British Rowing has clarified the schedule for a return to crew boat rowing for the fixed seat and gig rowing community.

British Rowing recommends that fixed seat and gig rowing clubs apply the advice set out in the ‘British Rowing -Coronavirus-Advice-Returning-to-Rowing-v5-2’ document. As with all clubs, the advice should be used to form appropriate risk assessments for the local environment the club operates in.

Clubs should base their return to crew boat rowing on the following timetable:

Phase Timing Allowed Boats
Phase D from 1 August No boats with more than two rowers, no coxed boats
Phase E from 15 August No boats with more than five individuals
Phase F from 29 August All boats allowed.

Particular considerations for fixed seat boats are:
Wherever possible at least two metres should be maintained between individuals, however, where this is not possible during launching/lifting, mitigations should be taken such as wearing face coverings.
When in the boat, individuals should maintain the maximum distance possible and avoid face-to-face contact as much as possible e.g. avoid turning to speak to a crew member or stopping for prolonged periods.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 09/08/2020

The CPGA statement of 16th March remains in place.

The CPGA are continuing to seek further guidance / clarification to ensure rowing can return in the safest possible manner.

We understand how frustrating it is to not be able to get back into the gig, but negative comments, especially on social media regarding the work of the CPGA or others are unhelpful and demoralising to those who are working to see a safe return.

It is each club’s responsibility to produce risk assessments for clubhouse use, equipment/boat use and return to rowing. This/these document(s) must be prepared and made available before any rowing activities, once the CPGA is given the go ahead.

Please see the Update of the 02/08/2020 for a number of resources.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 26/07/2020

The CPGA statement of 16th March remains in place.

Many of you have seen the BR guidance that has been published to support their rowing clubs as they return to the water.

The CPGA guidance for the safe return to rowing will be forthcoming.

Gig rowing currently sits outside the DCMS one (1) metre distancing requirements.
Eg distancing of 1m is not possible in a gig as thwart to thwart rowers are just 34 inches / 0.86cm apart.

The CPGA are seeking further guidance / clarification to ensure rowing can return in the safest possible manner.

We will keep all updated.

Please in the meantime if you have any thoughts / questions send via your club officers to secretary@cpga.co.uk

CPGA Coronavirus Update 12/07/2020

The CPGA statement of 16th March remains in place.

Whilst we understand all want to get back in the boat, currently it is still not the time to do so. Within the gig you are unable to social distance (please remember a gig is a 6 oared, coxed boat), health and hygiene along with many other issues to consider.

All rowing activities involving gigs / GRP boats continue to be suspended due to the requirements of social distancing. We will continue to keep this matter under review.

Clubs with gyms / ergos, the government has given the green light for the 25th July. You are reminded that as a club, you need to follow all the advice concerning the reopening of these areas and implement as required.

Please continue to monitor the following:

Crew Boats. Based on the 9th July advice from the UK Government, plans for team versions of sports must now be approved by the Government. We would consider crew boats to fall under this category and British Rowing will submit a plan accordingly. Until this plan is approved, gig rowing cannot take place.

We are monitoring the situation and guidance that is being issued. Updates will follow.

CPGA Coronavirus Update 07/05/2020

The CPGA is aware that the UK government will set its next steps regarding its Covid-19 policy on Sunday and there is plenty of speculation what this may mean for the wider world not just for rowing.  The CPGA will not change its guidance to member clubs given on 16th March (as below) until after the government communication has been given and its messages have been digested and further guidance can be drafted. Remember, the up-coming advice may not allow any return to our sport for some time yet.

Scenarios regarding any return to training or racing have been drafted and discussed by the CPGA committee; we are monitoring several Sport and NGB sites for information and feel we are as prepared as we can be to respond to any changes to guidance and will able to update you in a timely manner.  We urge that member clubs await a CPGA update before changing or drafting their own club policies.

Our future planning continues, how the current situation has affected our sport and its activities are being monitored and reviewed continually.  Advice on funding options available to clubs have been sent to club secretaries via the weekly news update, along with this Covid-19 page. We are also planning to regularly update the membership with Gig Rower features on progress with ongoing CPGA developments and projects.

Our GigRower team have done a wonderful job keeping our membership engaged with the GigRower Virtual Rowing Championships and keep the engagement going, showing last years Scilly World Championship footage and organising a virtual pub quiz, supporting this, history of gig rowing and quizzes have been put out via the CPGA instagram and twitter account to keep everyone thinking of our sport. We will continue developing our virtual engagement should this challenging time continue.

The Cornish Pilot Gig Association wish for all members of its community and their families to remain safe and well.
