Truro River Rowing Club are relaunching Royal after an extensive refit / rebuild on Wednesday 14th July at Loe Beach, Feock, Nr Truro at 7:30pm.

The club would like to extend a warm welcome to all CPGA members, especially those that have rowed in the Royal.

Royal was the first boat built for the Truro club and therefore has a special place in the hearts of club members both new and old.

CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

REMINDER

All clubs are asked to supply a rowing register to the CPGA each year. This register can be updated throughout the year with new members to the club.

Once registered to row with the club you are able to take part in championship events for that club. You are not able to row for another club at any championship event other than the club you are registered for. Rowing for another club will deem that crew disqualified.

You are also aware that at Tribute events in order to take part in the A and B races you need a total of 12 rowers - 6 for each crew. Unfortunately on Saturday at Mevagissey some clubs rowed A rowers in the B races despite being asked where they genuine crews. This is unsporting behaviour and unfair on clubs who are honest.

The C races at Rame have yet to be sorted as there is a limitation on the sheer number of gigs that the venue can handle. Information will follow, but please do not put A rowers in the B race.

 MIXED AND VETERANS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sponsored by Ginsters

All the rowing has now been done and the 2010 champions of each category have been crowned.

Congratulations to all those who took part and well done to Caradon for a smooth running event.

Thanks to all clubs who loaned boats for the new format over two days.

  UMPIRES TRAINING EVENINGS

As you should all be aware the Racing Rules have been amended for the 2010 season. They have been sent to all clubs, for all to read and digest.

It is apparent that the same few clubs are supplying umpires, but we need to have umpires from all clubs who are prepared to take an active part in this area of the sport.

Thanks to those who attended either of the evenings and made them a success.

Please ALL clubs, find someone who is interested in umpiring and contact your area rep who will be able to pass the information on, alternatively contact Peter Fisher directly.

FALMOUTH TRIBUTE EVENT

As you are aware there have recently been two letters sent to you regarding the Tribute event at Falmouth.

To clarify - the CPGA do not, at this time charge for Tribute events. There will be a review of the Tribute Series for 2011 as we are at the end of our three year cycle, but as member clubs you will be asked for input. Therefore £6 per boat is not required to take part.

The Gig Rower Championship is not being run by the CPGA and no money will be made from it by the CPGA.

 INSURANCE AND ROWING REGISTERS

Reminder to all that insurance documents MUST be logged with the CPGA. These need to be updated as and when required.

Failure to supply insurance documents or have documents that are out of date will result in your club being unable to take part in the events.

Rowing registers - these are to be updated as and when, but there must be a full copy of all logged ONE week prior to any championship event.

 AGM 2010

Sunday 17th January saw another three clubs - Bridport, Clevedon and Nankersey being accepted into the membership of the CPGA.

An additional aspect to the AGM of 2010 was the trade fair for the various companies involved with the CPGA and it is hoped that this will be built upon in future years.

The committee was elected en mass and Norma Edwards was elected as President.

The development group - Rob Grose, Nicky Davey and Mike White presented to the membership  and hopefully gained a huge amount of feedback to now digest and bring to the next full CPGA meeting.

Along with the new clubs there are also a few new area reps : - working west to east. Charlotte Roberts - West, Esther Oldrieve - Lizard (although there is still a vacancy in their area), Jeremy Webb - WANDS. There is still a vacancy for the Mid Devon and Dorset area, Rachel Holgate would love the company on the journey to meetings.

GIG RECORD

Some of you may be aware that there are now over 140 Cornish Pilot Gigs on the CPGA register. With such a huge number it is important that the information about all of them is available to all. With this in mind the CPGA will be publishing a book that gives information about each gig, e.g. choice of name, colours and a photo of each gig.

More details will follow on the website and to all clubs.

 VHF RADIOS, GIGS AND EVENTS

Thanks to Tich Preston - Asst Sec of the CPGA for undertaking this research

Hand Held VHF radios, individually, need to be licensed to a person / organisation by OFCOM http://www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc/ the cost is nil but it is illegal to transmit on these channels without the individual radio being licensed by OFCOM.
For info...Fixed sets in vessels need the radio to be registered to the vessel & these details are asked for if you go down that route on the website.

The operator of the set, H/H or fixed, needs to have taken & passed the Maritime Radio Operator's Certificate issued by the RYA & several organisations run courses to achieve this qualification. Another person can operate the radio under strict supervision of a qualified person. So one qualified person in a gig is sufficient as long as radio etiquette is applied & this is why we are urging people to complete these operator courses.

Operator courses can cost between £35 & £100 depending on where you choose, the end result is the same, the RYA qualification. The RYA exam & photo license attracts a £25 additional charge to most courses. Therefore the cheapest maybe £60 per candidate?

If you require some pointers as to the cheaper end of the scale please cpgaweb@aol.com however, there are plenty of options on the net!

INDOOR ROWING

The CPGA have been successful in an application to the ARA's Community Club Development Programme (CCDP), which has enabled the purchase of 12 Concept 2 Rowing Machines.

The machines will be held centrally by the CPGA, who will invite clubs to make an application for a maximum of 4 machines per club, which they will be loaned for a 4 month period. Clubs applying will be required to provide an outline of how they intend to use the machines during that time, and how this will help them to increase participation in rowing in their local community.

Currently Caradon, Lyme Regis and Padstow have use of the ergos, feedback from the clubs is really positive about the use.

The next loan period sees the ergos being shared between - Caradon, Cadgwith, Lyme Regis, Goran and Mounts Bay

As far in the future as we go currently, the loan period will end Mid May 2010.

Clubs who wish to apply are invited to complete the attached application form and return to cpgaweb@aol.com
