Newquay Pilot Gig Club

Newquay Rowing Club is the oldest gig club in existence and was formed in 1921. The club started with the three old gigs, Newquay (built in 1812), Dove (1820) and Treffry(1838), the latter being the template for all modern pilot gigs. Apart from the Isles of Scilly, Newquay was the last port in Cornwall to have pilot gigs. Newquay Rowing Club now has 8 pilot gigs, including the 3 old gigs which are still raced today. The club has a strong tradition of in-house racing, with races taking place every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout the summer, as well as cup races. Monday is Junior night and Tuesday is Novice, all welcome, the club also boasts its own licensed bar with regular events and entertainment. Please see our website for more information
